Lulab, Jimz Aaron G. - Written Work 2
“My Critical Analysis on Philippine Literature by Frank R. Blake”
The Philippine literature was being revamped by the native populations of the Philippine
archipelago. Historical heritages, pre-colonial to Spanish eras, depict the structure of Philippine
literature. Based on Frank R. Blake, author of the article Philippine Literature, the native
inhabitants of the Philippine islands consist of tribes, tribes in which different styles and
languages revitalize the country's literature. From the author mentioned phrases, these different
styles mean the literature to be a form of artistic and elegant writing. Thus, the purpose of his
work was determined to disseminate and explain facts about Philippine literature to researchers.
It begins with the history with an explanation of the background of the different tribes.
The author broadens the knowledge about contributions and relations of the Philippines' various
tribes to its literature, including the work style, work form, and language of the works. The
life-giving roots and their branches to the Philippine literature, such as religions and cultures,
were explained. Moros' and Christians' backgrounds, lifestyles, language, and the size of its
communities assisted the knowledge. Including some of those religious books from different
religions were briefly introduced. And giving importance to the mentioned ideas from the article
on era to era, showing various examples of forms of writing and how they were written.
In addition, the author accurately stated the historical background of Philippine literature,
including its movement from pre-colonial times when the popularity of folk dances, narratives,
speeches, songs, and primordial rituals happens until Spanish times when the Christian tribes
introduced the epics, riddles, legends, proverbs, and songs. The Philippine literature was indeed
presented briefly by its evolution from time to time.
Due to the construction of the paper's structure, considering its clear evidence, the ideas
supporting it, its formality from its sentences and word choices, and citations, the article was
effective and comprehensive, especially to academic readers.
The native population has developed the Philippine Literature from pre-colonial to
colonial periods. From the evolution it showed from time to time, we can look at and differentiate
the style and form of writing, including the languages. It indeed evolved. To conclude, studies
like this are essential, especially in the history of Philippine Literature from pre-colonial to colonial
periods, since it can be a reflection of one's country. Moreover, this study does broaden my
ideas about my country's literature, Philippine Literature.
